Ep. #20 – How 10 Minutes a Day Can Change Your Life

“I think the present moment is so underrated. It sounds so ordinary, and yet, we spend so little time in the present moment that it’s anything but ordinary.”

– Andy Puddicombe – Former Tibetan Monk, Trained Circus Performer and Founder of Headspace

In thie Episode

You’re going to find out about the mental, physical and spiritual benefits of spending just 10 minutes a day meditating.

You’re going to find out about a tool you can use that will completely demystify and simplify the idea of meditation.

This tool is also going to make meditation seem like a normal part of a normal person’s life rather than something a guru on a mountaintop might spend his day doing.

Benefits of Meditation

Andy Puddicombe, the person I quoted above does a fantastic and entertaining job in this TED Talk, explaining why meditation is incredibly beneficial:

You may have used relaxation or meditation techniques to deal with stress, but it can actually be used as a preventative practice

Brain Activity REALLY changes within a few days of starting a meditation practice

Meditation has been show to help with:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Addiction
  • Focus
  • Sleep
  • Depression

Misconceptions of Meditation

I’ve tried thinking about nothing and it doesn’t work.

This is such a hurdle for so many people but the truth is, meditation isn’t about “thinking about nothing” it’s about being mindful of what you ARE thinking about.  It’s also not something at which you can “fail.”  There is no failure in meditation.

I don’t have the time in my day to sit and do nothing.

You don’t need a special chair, a cousin, candles, incense or anything else other than yourself. At some point you may find you can enjoy your time more if you have a different chair or some music that helps center your mind, but it’s not a requirement. Don’t let that stop you.

It’s not in alignment with my faith.

Meditation isn’t something that’s exclusive of any faith. In fact, if you’re an Atheist, you can still utilize the practice of meditation and so many do.  Yes, I believe meditation connections you on a spiritual level with something outside of, or even deep inside of, yourself.  Meditation can connect you with God or your creative Source.  But it doesn’t go against any spiritual principles or faiths.

There are several different ways you can use Headspace depending on your particular likes or circumstances.

Headspace was founded by Andy Puddicombe, who is from the UK.  When he started mediation with him mom when his pre-teen years and ended up heading off to become a Tibetan monk at the age of 22. Ten years later he returned to England and got an education in the Circus Arts from his local University.
